The race for the Prince George-Valemount riding is set.
UNBC political science student Laura Parént will be running for the NDP in the upcoming provincial election on October 24.
Parént, born and raised in Prince George, will be running against incumbent Liberal MLA Shirley Bond, Green candidate Mackenzie Kerr, and Sean Robson of the Libertarian Party.
The 21-year-old highlights accessibility to healthcare services as the main focus of her campaign.
“Given we are in a global pandemic and healthcare is critical, particularly for our aging population for the north, we need to focus on getting services to the region quickly,” Parent explained.
She knows she is considered a younger candidate but feels it will bode well for her.
“I have a different way of looking at things than people who are currently in political roles. I’m young, energetic, and passionate, and ready to do what it takes to serve Prince George-Valemount,” she said. “It’s time we see some new faces.”
She has been involved with the party for three years, but the inspiration to run came from Madeline Lalonde who ran for the NDP in Vancouver-Quilchena in 2017.
Outside of politics, Parént is also a scouts leader, a UNBC senator, and a Vice-Chair of the university senate.
