UNBC support staff strike with faculty

Job action continues at UNBC with no negotiations in sight.

Picket lines are still up around downtown PG and at several spots along University Way leading to campus.

Also on strike is CUPE local 3799 – the University’s support staff.

President Caroline Sewell says they are on strike in support.

“We have a strong history with solidarity, being on the front-line with those that are in job action, so it’s important for us to be out here supporting the faculty,” she says. “We are the people that keep the university running in the background for the faculty and the students.”

Sewell says if this strike drags out it will become harder on support staff than the faculty.

“Our strike pay is a little different than the faculty’s strike pay, it’ll be awhile before we start to see strike pay coming in from CUPE BC and CUPE national, so we are really hoping this will be short,” she says.

Classes remain cancelled.

The Ministry of Advanced Education, speaking on behalf of Minister Andrew Wilkinson says they will not be commenting on the ongoing job action at this time.
