Province launches employment program for single parents

The province is giving an assist for families on income assistance trying to get into the workforce.

The Ministry of Social Development and Innovation announced that $24.5 million is being invested to help single parents cover tuition and education costs while training for a new job through the Single Parent Employment Initiative.

Minister Michelle Stilwell says it isn’t about a dollar figure, but wrapping support around families “Based on what their needs are.”

“Every individual has a different starting point and has different circumstances, so they will be referred to a Work BC assessment, and depending on their needs, they will be supported any way we possibly can through this initiative,” she says.

Stilwell says funding could go to help cover costs for transportation and child-care, as well.

The initiative will kick-in September 1st, 2015.
