Kin Centres could see arena chiller upgrades

The Prince George Kin Centre Arenas could be due for an upgrade.

City Council will consider adding the Kin Centre Arenas Chiller Replacement project to the 2021 – 2025 Financial Plan at tomorrow’s (Monday) meeting.

According to a report to Council, the refrigeration plant system is nearing the end of its service life, resulting in lower efficiency and higher operating costs.

Proposed upgrades include replacement of the refrigeration plant system to support ongoing use, recover energy for reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reduce water consumption by 765,000 gallons, reduce ammonia charges by 70 per cent, and improve the overall safety of arena operations.

The total project cost would be about $4,450,000 with funding sources of $3,259,519 third party funding and $1,185,482 from the Carbon Tax Reserve Fund.

The City would also be submitting a grant funding application for the project through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – Green Infrastructure: Climate Change Mitigation sub-stream CleanBC Communities Fund.

If approved, the acting City Manager and Financial Officer would be authorized to sign any relevant documents.

Projects must begin before the Fall of 2022, with full project completion by March 31, 2026.

The announcement of federal ICIP grant funding is anticipated in late 2021, with potential construction to start in 2022.
