New entrance unveiled for PG Public Library’s Bob Harkins Branch

The new entrance to the Bob Harkins Branch of the Prince George Public Library was officially opened downtown this week.

The entrance, originally budgeted at $2.47 million, had been increased by $1.48 million by City Council.

According to a report to council heard at last night’s (Monday) meeting, the $3.95 million project is over budget by $230,000 and will cost over $4 million by the time the entrance is complete.

The project involved the installation of a two-and-a-half storey addition to the north side of the Library, which will increase the accessibility and security of the facility.

It also includes an elevator with access from both sides, improved stairs, windows to increase natural light, sliding glass doors and accessible parking.

Earlier this year and as part of the operation, the City undertook a renovation to the Library’s circulation area.

That part of the operation included the installation of a new circulation desk countertop.

Also as part of the project, crews recently installed a sidewalk connecting the parking lot to Canada Games Plaza, the first in Prince George to be heated with renewable energy.
