March is Kidney Awareness Month in BC

March is Kidney Health Month and the Kidney Foundation of BC is wanting to raise awareness on what can cause kidney disease.

Kidney Foundation Director Paul Duperron says diabetes and high blood pressure are the two main causes of kidney disease.

“We always encourage people to get their EGFR tested, which is estimated glumerol filtration rate tested, for people that are high risk and that basically anyone over 55 or Asian or Aboriginal.”

Northern Regional Director Dianne Duperron says its hard to know if you are having issues with your kidneys.

“Kidney disease is a silent disease, and 80% of your function can be destroyed before you even know that you have a problem.”

Paul says there are 700 people that come to the kidney clinic in Prince George in a year.

Something going on in the Prince George area you think people should know about?
