Cougars to share importance of healthy lifestyle with local students

The Prince George Cougars will be spreading the word about healthy living to students.

Due to the pandemic, the Spirit of Healthy Kids program will be held virtually this year.

Last year, the Cougars, the Northern Health Authority, and the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation expanded the SOHK School Program to include schools across the Northern Health region.

The program, now in its sixth year, is being offered to close to 200 elementary schools throughout the North.

“The ongoing pandemic has impacted everyone and despite the challenges our team is facing, we felt it was more important than ever to find a way to offer our extremely successful school program this winter,” said Cougars’ Vice President, Business Andy Beesley.

“We are deeply concerned about the health and wellness of everyone, but particularly the young children throughout Northern BC, who we feel will benefit from the wisdom, leadership, and healthy messages our players have willingly shared.”

Students will view a video featuring Cougars’ players that has health and wellness information, then record their healthy activities in tracking sheets for the next two weeks.

After two weeks, students have to bring their tracking sheet to their school and hand it in to their teacher.

This year the school with the highest overall level of participation could win a $5,000 grant.
