Municipal Audtor Basia Ruta to be fired

The BC government says it will fire Auditor General for Local Government, Basia Ruta.

Community Development Minister and Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes announced Monday morning that because of Ruta’s refusal to participate in a performance review, she is required to issue a recommendation from the Audit Council to remove Ruta from her role.

“I believe removing the auditor general is necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the office,” Oakes said.

Oakes went on to call out the lack of work coming from Ruta’s office and said it is nothing short of an “Unstable work environment.”

No replacement has been announced yet, though Oaks said the Audit Council will recommend a candidate for government approval.

With a $5 million budget, Ruta’s office has only produced three audits in two years.
