ICBC warns of Daylight Savings related driving hazards

It’s almost time to push clocks ahead by one hour for Daylight Savings.

The switch will be made at 2:00 am on Sunday, giving PG residents an extra hour of daylight.

However, the change also means drivers in BC will be operating on one less hour of sleep, which according to Doug MacDonald, ICBC’s Northern BC Spokesperson, means drivers might be a little sleepier on their morning commute.

“It’s important to get a little extra sleep to make sure you aren’t rushing to work on Monday morning,” he explained, “just give yourself a little more time so you can get to work a little safer.”

Weather conditions are also changing during this time of year which means drivers have more obstacles, such as potholes and slippery corners, to look out for.

“On top of the Daylight Savings time it’s important to give yourself more time to get to where you’re going because we’re seeing the road conditions change,” Macdonald stated.

As PG warms up,  Macdonald says it’s imperative drivers be extra cautious of the increasing number of pedestrians and cyclists out during this time.

He also advises all cyclists and pedestrians to wear bright, reflective clothing when going out in the later hours of the day.

“With the time change, drivers might be headed to work with daylight so it’s important we all have proper glasses and sunglasses while on the roads,” he said.

March is also Distracted Driver Awareness month in BC, and Macdonald reminds PG residents that checking phones while driving, even when stopped at a red light or sign, is illegal.
