Prince George COVID-19 vaccination clinic hits the ground running

The Civic and Conference Centre is now operating as Prince George’s COVID-19 vaccination clinic.

Today (Tuesday), the centre has around 200 appointments booked from Northern Health residents aged 80 and up and Indigenous residents aged 65 and up.

Northern Health staggered the appointments so that recipients could remain socially distant during the entire appointment.

This staggering method kept there from being any lines heading into the auditorium and got recipients in immediately.

Kathleen and her 90-year old mother, Edith, have lived in the Northern Capitol their entire lives, they received their first dose of the vaccine this morning.

“It was no worse than a flu shot, we just hope we don’t have to deal with any of the side effects,” explained Kathleen.

The two are most excited for the day that they don’t have to wear masks anymore, as Edith wears a hearing aid and relies on lip-reading to communicate.

Kathleen says she was feeling extremely relieved going into the appointment adding, “it’s like we’re one step closer to being free.”

Appointments take around 25 minutes, this includes the mandatory 15-minute post-vaccination wait time.

Brian, another PG resident was among those that received a vaccine this morning, he says he’s most excited to travel and visit his family and friends once things are a little safer.

“I’m halfway protected but I’m still going to maintain the way I’ve been dealing with things the whole time, my wife can’t get her doses until later on,” he stated.

Bernie Macrae also received a vaccine,  he says he expected the place to be much busier.

“It was good, quick and easy – I don’t feel any different but it sure feels good to have a little more protection,” Macrae stated.

Northern Health residents are being asked to check the NH website for community COVID-19 vaccination plans, as age-restrictions differ between a number of communities.
