Spruce Kings fall short in hard-fought effort against Chilliwack

One goal was enough for the Chilliwack Chiefs.

On Friday, the Prince George Spruce Kings came up empty against their long-time rival dropping a 1-0 close shave from the Chilliwack Coliseum in BCHL action.

The only scoring came at 16:25 of the opening period as Dawson Good lit the lamp shorthanded against Spruce Kings netminder Jordan Fairlie.

After PG outshot Chilliwack 12-9 after 20 minutes, the game tightened up considerably as the Chiefs edged the Spruce Kings in shots the rest of the way by a 12-11 margin.

Chilliwack went 0-for-4 on the power-play while the Spruce Kings were unable to score on their two opportunities.

Mathieu Caron pitched a 23-save shutout for the Chiefs who improved to 3-1.

20-year-old blueliner Tanner Main made his long awaited season debut for PG after breaking his leg during the exhibition period in November against Trail.

The Spruce Kings were without captain and fellow blueliner Mason Waite. Zach Gabruch also drew back into the lineup after sitting out Wednesday’s 11-2 victory against Merritt.

After registering his first two BCHL points, Linden Makow was scratched from the lineup in favour of Kilian McGregor-Bennett who returned from injury.

It’s a short turn around for PG (2-2) who play the Merritt Centennials (1-3) Saturday at 5pm from the Chilliwack Coliseum.
