Prince George Firefighters respond to early morning pickup truck explosion

Prince George RCMP and Fire services were called to an early morning fire today (Friday), after receiving a report that a pickup truck was engulfed in flames.

Emergency services responded to the fire at a residence on Lalonde Road after witness and Prince George City Councillor, Brian Skakun heard a large blast from his home.

“I was up for work right before 5 am when my wife heard two large bangs and my dogs were going crazy,” he explained, “I looked out and saw black smoke coming from my neighbour’s yard.”

Skakun went out and saw the flames coming from his neighbour’s backyard and called emergency services immediately after assuring there was nobody hurt.

Prince George Fire Chief John Iverson said that they were unable to determine what caused the fire due to the extensive damage.

“It’s not uncommon for us to attend vehicle fires, they do happen and it’s really challenging for us to determine the cause of any vehicle fire unless we have a witness who can provide a statement detailing exactly what happened,” he explained.

Skakun noted the incident could’ve been a lot worse as the truck was parked right by the house and a trailer.

“There was one or two vehicles in front of it, the truck was sort of in the back yard so I don’t think it had been moved in the past several hours but for it just to start burning – it’s weird,” Skakun added.

The fuel tank had already exploded when the fire department managed to extinguish the flames, a process that took about 5 minutes according to Skakun.
