Kings of the Pod; PG doubles Chilliwack to end BCHL season

The Prince George Spruce Kings reached the top of the mountain – sort of.

A three goal first period from Christian Buono, Tanner Main and Kilian McGregor-Bennett helped pace the Spruce Kings to a 4-2 win on Sunday against the Chilliwack Chiefs.

The victory saw them claim the three-team pod, which also included the Merritt Centennials (3-17-0-0).

Abraham Weibe’s point shot at 18:05 of the opening frame trimmed the PG lead to 3-1 after the opening 20 minutes.

Undeterred, the Spruce Kings kept coming in waves in the second period.

Chiefs goaltender Mathieu Caron misplayed the puck behind his own net, turning it over to Buono who then passed it to former Cariboo Cougar John Herrington who placed it into the open cage.

Fifty seconds later, Sasha Teleguine replied for Chilliwack driving wide to the goal and tucking it underneath the pad of Aaron Trotter making it a 4-2 edge.

PG locked it down defensively in the third not allowing a goal in the final 20 minutes.

Main and McGregor-Bennett’s goals were their first and only markers of the pod season.

Chilliwack outshot Prince George 29-21 overall while going 1-for-3 on the power-play.

Trotter finished the pod with a 1.63 goals against average and a .934 save percentage helping the Spruce Kings to a 14-5-0-1 record.

The victory is bittersweet for PG who will say good-bye to Buono (overage), Main (overage, NCAA), Andrew Seaman (overage, NCAA), Mason Waite (overage, NCAA), Hunor Torzsok (overage), and Corey Cunningham (NCAA).
