Theatre Northwest takes to the stage with script readings

Theatre Northwest opens its doors with the recent provincial announcement of phased re-openings.

“They (script readings) are a great tool in theatre, and have been a great way to get local artists on stage while still abiding by all provincial health orders,” said Marnie Hamagami, Executive Director of Theatre Northwest.

While the theatre is back up and running, it still has hurdles to jump through.

“It’s that inability to have that intimacy. It’s the challenge to use subtle gestures with hands to maintain that suspension of disbelief for the audience, so we maintain this spell,” said Andrew Keilty, one of the actors playing in an upcoming script reading.

Keilty read an excerpt from the play, “The Last Wife” by Kate Hennig on stage, and even though there was social distancing, you could still feel your skin crawl from the dialog his character had.

“It’s improvising, which is certainly one of the foundational skills an actor needs to have in their toolkit,” Keilty added.

The readings start up on Friday. (June 25)
