PG to break local heat records; Lytton sets Canadian heat record

While yesterday didn’t quite break heat records in Prince George, today and tomorrow are set to smash them.

According to Environment Canada Meteorologist Mike Gismondi, yesterday hit 32.7 degrees in the city, where the record was 33.3, which was set in 1925.

“Today’s record is 29.4 degrees and Monday is 30 degrees. But we’re forecasting high temperatures of 37 and 40, so I expect those records will just get smashed,” said Gismondi.

A Heat Warning remains in effect for Prince George.

Gismondi also mentioned that the province could potentially see national records get broken this week, with Lytton forecasted to hit 47 degrees by Tuesday, making it the hottest temperature Canada has ever seen.

UPDATE (as of 5:00 p.m. Sunday)

Lytton, B.C. broke the all-time heat record for Canada, recording a temperature of 46.1 C. The previous record of 45 C was set in Saskatchewan in 1937.

Environment Canada reminds BC residents not to leave pets or people in parked vehicles, and to check on any older family, friends, or neighbors in the coming days.
