PG indoor recreational facilities get the green light to open up

Prince George City Council has approved the reopening of all six city arenas and the PG Conference and Civic Centre (PGCCC).

The startup costs to get the arenas running will put the city back $110,000.

Those funds will come from the Safe Restart Program, which started at $6,110,000 and is currently just over $3,000,000 following the city using some of the funds to offset a 2.7% tax hike.

Parts of the Kin Centre have already been open, Kin 2 and 3 have had ice all year long, and Kin 1 could be ready by August 16.

The CN Centre is slated to open back up on August 30.

RMCA could have the first day of ice by September 16, and Elksentre would be ready by October 2.

The PGCCC is currently being leased out by Northern Health until December 31 as a vaccination clinic.

The city is optimistic that Northern Health could wrap up by early fall, and could potentially open up the PGCCC to other organizations by late fall, provided the vaccination rollout goes as planned.

The Aquatic Centre has already opened, and the expected move into Step 3 on July 1 would see things like saunas and steam rooms open back up, and increase the cap for people allowed in the pool.

The Aquatic Centre will be closed for maintenance on September 6, and by the time they open up on October 12, they hope to be in Step 4.

City Council also discussed the Safe Streets Bylaw, which had the final reading pushed back to August 30.
