Backup from Alberta arrives to help battle wildfires

The Prince George Fire Centre (PGFC) received some backup from our neighbours in Alberta.

“PGFC welcomed 17 personnel from Alberta yesterday; they have been deployed to Mackenzie, Vanderhoof, and Dawson Creek zones,” said Sharon Nickel, Information Officer with the PGFC.

“Resources are tight across the entire province with 307 active fires in BC, 28 of which are fires of note, 8 of which are in the Prince George Fire Centre,” she added.

The PGFC has 65 active wildfires.

The 8 active wildfires considered of note are:

  • Black Pine
  • Camsell Lake
  • Cutoff Creek
  • Forres Mountain
  • Grizzly Lake
  • Klawli Lake
  • Mount Porter
  • Tentfire Creek

BC Wildfire Service suspects at least 18 of the fires in the province were human-caused, only 2 of those are in the PGFC.

Over 58,000 hectares have been burned in the PGFC.

The largest wildfire of note in the PGFC is still the Cutoff Creek fire, estimated at around 12,000 hectares.

Nickel also warns about the smoke from these fires.

Environment Canada issued their Smoky Skies bulletin yesterday (Tuesday) for much of north/northeast BC and this remains in effect for the next 24-48 hours. With the current winds, it is possible that we may receive more smoke in the PG area (coming from fires southwest of us).”

You can check the Air Quality Index, as well as find ways to limit your exposure to smoke here.
