PG Sexual Assault Centre moves due to unsafe conditions and higher demand

The Prince George Sexual Assault Centre (PGSAC) recently moved to a new location in the city on 4th avenue.

The increase in demand for Sexual Assault Centre services has caused the PGSAC to double its size and staff members.

“We’ve noticed that through the course of the last 2 years, or year and a half of the pandemic that there has been an increased demand for our services as a sexual assault centre, and as advocates within the community,” said Manager of Programs with PGSAC, Kendra Kurisu.

The not for profit organization also found their previous location on Quebec street made clients and staff feel unsafe.

They were located in downtown PG, and Kurisu said they were dealing with vandalism to vehicles and having to step over dirty needles and bodily substances.

“We have young kids that come in for counselling in our centre, we have a children’s and youth program. And to have kids walking through that neighbourhood in order to see a trauma counsellor, and being re-traumatized before they even enter the building isn’t conducive to the services that we are trying to convey,” Kurisu added.

The PGSAC is looking for more help and funds to fill the space they have, and they hope to hold an open house as well.
