NHL:

The Seattle Kraken have their first 30 players following the expansion draft. Chris Driedger is poised to be the Kraken’s starting goalie next season, while the roster includes former Flames captain Mark Giordano, ex-PG Cougar Denis Cholowski (from Detroit), longtime Islanders winger Jordan Eberle and defenseman Adam Larsson (from Edmonton). The Kraken selected forward Kole Lind from Vancouver and defenceman Cale Fleury from Montreal.

Olympics:

The Canadian women’s softball team is 1-1 at the Tokyo Games after a 1-0 loss to the USA.  Canada won its opener 4-0 over Mexico.

The Canadian women’s soccer team tied host Japan 1-1. Christine Sinclair scored for Canada in her 300th appearance with the team.

Men’s rugby sevens player Nathan Hirayama (who is from BC) and Women’s basketball player Miranda Ayim will be Canada’s flag-bearers for the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics on Friday.

Canada has sent a team of 371 athletes (225 women and 146 men) to Tokyo.

Among the female athletes: track star Regan Yee of Hazelton who will compete in the 3000 Metre Steeplechase and Kayla Moleschi of Williams Lake who is part of the women’s rugby team.

The Olympics run through to August 8th.
