One person injured following early morning shooting downtown

A woman has been hospitalized following a shooting in Prince George.

As a result, the Prince George RCMP has launched an investigation into a shots fired call near 5th Avenue and Ottawa Street just after 3 o’clock this morning (Friday).

When officers arrived at the “tent city,” they located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound.

She was transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries and the severity of them is currently unknown.

Police say this appears to be a targeted incident.

Corporal Jennifer Cooper noted the detachment has made some changes to its downtown patrols since the shooting took place.

“We have extended our Downtown Safety Unit to incorporate more officers and increasing the number of overtime members that we have that are down patrolling the downtown area as well.”

In addition, the area of the “tent city” location has also undergone a spike in crime.

“What we have seen is an increase in break and enters and stolen property in the area as well as calls for mischief.”

Cooper added between 35 and 50 people live along the 5th street tent city location on a given day.

The investigation is still in its early stages and officers will be in the area for an undetermined length of time.
