The UNBC Timberwolves named graduating players Sidney Roy (Soccer) and Franco Kouagnia (Basketball) their Female and Male Athletes of the Year. Both received their awards at the UNBC Athletics banquet.
Roy set a new women’s soccer and university record for goals in a season with six. Roy is also the all-time goal scorer for the Timberwolves women’s soccer program with 13 goals in just three seasons.
Kouagnia was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star after he helped lead the Timberwolves to a 12-8 regular season record, and UNBC’s first playoff appearance since joining Canada West in 2012. Kouagnia averaged
16.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
The Timberwolves also selected Vasiliki Louka (Basketball) and Francesco Bartolillo (Soccer) as their Female and Male Rookies of the Year.
Louka from Athens, Greece, averaged 11.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
Bartolillo’s season was highlighted by a free kick which gave his a team a 1-0 victory over Trinity Western in the men’s first six-point weekend.

–The Penticton Vees are the BCHL Fred Page Cup champions. The Vees edged the Nanaimo Clippers 3-2 in overtime to win the best of seven final 4-2. Ex PG Cougar Brett Roulston notched one of the goals for the Clippers. Roulston finished the playoffs with a team leading 17 points, including seven goals, in 23 games.
–Home teams won all four playoff games (Friday) in the WHL. Kelowna whipped Victoria 7-3, Calgary nipped Medicine Hat 4-3 in double overtime, Brandon got by Regina in overtime and Portland doubled Everett 2-1 in OT. Kelowna, Calgary and Brandon all win their Conference semi-finals 4-1 while Portland enjoys a 3-1 series lead with game six Sunday in Everett.
–Canada beat host Switzerland 4-1 at the World Under-18 Hockey Championship. Jansen Harkins of the Prince George Cougars picked up an assist for the Canadian team that is 2-0 and will play again Sunday against the Czech Republic and Tuesday vs. Finland.
–Nearly 300 swimmers from 9 clubs are competing in the Prince George Barracudas Medical Moose long course swim meet at the Aquatic Centre. Competition wraps up Sunday afternoon.
