ELECTION 2021: Liberals capture minority government again

It looks like our new Parliament will be a lot like the old one.

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau will be forming a minority government again, after winning the most seats in yesterday’s (Monday) federal election.

The Conservatives, again, came in second, with the NDP finishing third.

All three parties captured almost the same number of ridings they took in 2019.

The Liberals are leading or elected in 158 ridings followed by the Conservatives with 119, Bloc Quebecois 34, NDP 25, and Green with 2.
To form a majority government one party needed at least 170 seats.
Trudeau hinted at the concerns Canadians had during the election, telling a crowd in his home riding in Montreal that he’s heard that people don’t want any more talk about elections….but want their elected representatives to get to work.

Conservative leader Erin O’Toole says it’s clear that his party has more work to do to win the support of voters.

The Conservatives finished about two percentage points ahead of the Liberals in the total popular vote.

Here are the vote percentages by party:

  • Liberals 32.2%
  • Conservatives 34%
  • NDP 17.7%
  • Bloc Quebecois 7.8%
  • Other 8.4%

The Conservatives held onto their power base in eastern B-C, winning almost all ridings from the Fraser Valley to the Alberta border.

However, the party did suffer some losses, losing two seats in the Richmond area to the Conservatives.

They also lost Port Moody to the New Democrats.

In Vancouver-Granville, held by former Liberal cabinet minister Judy Wilson-Raybould, the Liberals are holding onto a narrow lead over the NDP.

There is a chance some results in ridings that were close may change, once mail-in ballots are counted.

There are about one million ready to be opened…..a record.

All those ballots must be verified…..and election officials must make sure those people didn’t vote in person before they can be counted.

The totals may not be available until tomorrow (Wednesday).
