Gear up, PG! Roller Derby “Try It” night taking place at Roll-a-dome

Anyone aged 18+ who is looking to give Roller Derby a try is invited to the Rated PG Rollerderby clubs’ “Try It” night at 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm on Monday.

It will take place at the Roll-a-dome, and participants only need to bring a mouthguard and helmet since the club is providing the rest of the gear, including skates.

Jamie Mault, known as “Nandicorn” on the track is the President of Rated PG Rollerderby, she says no previous experience is necessary, as participants will be taught the most basic skills.

“We will teach you how to skate and everything else you need to know. Anyone who isn’t able to come can join to try it at a later practice too,” she said.

According to Mault, team sports can be extremely beneficial because they can provide meaningful life lessons and create lasting friendships.

“I really like roller derby as a team sport because a lot of people who haven’t found community or acceptance in more mainstream traditional team sports can definitely find a home in roller derby,” she explained.

She says anyone can learn to play, and anyone who has been thinking about trying should just do it, noting that it will be a fun, easy-going environment.

“When you think about a roller derby athlete, there isn’t really one particular body type that is better at roller derby because there are different positions, and we kind of find a place for all body types. So no matter what your age, body type, or gender is roller derby can work for you and I think that’s really something unique,” she stated.

Mault says one of the biggest misconceptions about Roller Derby is that it is extremely dangerous, however she says that it is no more dangerous than any other contact sport such as football or lacrosse.

Both men and women 18+ are welcome, and proof of vaccination will be required by all attendees.
