Malaspina Daycare Project impacts potential of a new off-leash dog park

The People, Pets, and Parks Off-Leash Program in Prince George was implemented to create more off-leash dog parks in the city, but a new daycare may take away a potential location.

Malaspina Park ball diamond was being considered for the off-leash program, with the City receiving an 84% approval rating from 175 residents who were polled on the subject.

During last night’s (Monday) city council meeting, it was discussed that the Malaspina Daycare Project is also being pursued by the City, but is in the conceptual design phase and may overlap into the ballpark area.

No decision has been made yet on either project, and Councillor Kyle Sampson sees both sides of the issue.

“We’re actively pursuing this daycare facility as it’s needed for our community, but we’re also actively pursuing spaces like this, off-leash parks because we’re hearing from residents that’s really important to them,” said Sampson.

It was noted that the ballpark was being used by residents, and Mayor Lyn Hall wanted to make sure that they knew what was potentially happening in the area.

“The residents of that particular area use that location as their dog park, and if we can get something out to them with respect to this particular discussion this evening and what we’re doing with that location.”
