Prince George City Council is considering other options when it comes to the Lower Patricia Boulevard encampment.
On October 22nd, the BC Supreme Court ruled on the City’s injunction request to remove two homeless encampments, one on Lower Patricia Boulevard and the other on George Street.
The encampment at George Street has since been removed and all 20 occupants living there have since moved into the Knights Inn, however, the one on Lower Patricia Boulevard, also known as “Moccasin Flats” may remain until suitable housing is available.
However, Council has authorized the following actions:
1) An application to the BC Supreme Court to close the Lower Patricia encampment when evidence of suitable housing has been provided by BC Housing.
2) An appeal of the decision in Prince George (City) v. Stewart, 2021 BCSC 2089 to the BC Court of Appeal, and to seek assistance on the costs of the appeal from the UBCM appeal fund and other local governments in BC.
The purpose of the new court application is public safety for the Lower Patricia encampment occupants and neighboring residents and businesses.
The City has been working closely with BC Housing and is informed that housing and emergency shelter space are available now.
