Prince George Social Worker joins SD 57 Trustee by-election race

Another candidate has thrown his hat in the ring for the open Trustee spot in the upcoming School District 57 by-election.

Andrew Burton says he has had an interest in education and the youth of Prince George for many years, and has experience working with them.

“I’ve worked as a social worker in the community, and in that role, I did a lot of work with young people,” Burton said.

He says in his work as a social worker, along with his youth program, the Street Spirit Theatre Company, he got quite involved with the youth population.

“I was able to recognize a lot of the problems people were having in their lives, and also a lot of the problems we’re having in getting an educational system that’s going to work for everyone.”

He says schools need to be more just than ‘a place to put the kids for a few hours a day’.

“It certainly needs to provide the education and support for our young people, but they need to be a part of the community,” Burton explained.

“We need to look for ways we can use schools resources as part of the community, so we can build that sense of belonging.”

A list of the candidates Burton will be running against will be confirmed later today.

The by-election is set for January 15th.
