Research helping those accessing mental health services

A new research project from the Northern Medical Program is seeing mental health patients get all types of support.

With the help of the Activity Centre for Empowerment in Prince George, mental health patients have been learning how to be active along with good nutrition.

Dr. Candida Graham says when she first started the research, they found out living a healthy lifestyle was different for those accessing mental health services.

“And for me it was like exercise and diet,” says Graham, “but for mental health service users it was like having friends, it was feeling connected, it was feeling valued, having enough money to put a roof over your head, and then be able to have enough left over to buy healthy food.”

Graham says they have partnered with the YMCA, Chinook Yoga and the Northern Sports Centre to give the clients the resources they need.

About 60 people are participating in the project.
