George Street Parkade final cost was $10 million over original estimate

An independent report found the final cost for the George Street Parkade was $22,458,437.

The original estimated cost was $12.6 million.

SSA Quantity Surveyors Ltd put together the report and said reasonable construction costs would have been around $21.6 million.

The City of Prince George said there were infrastructure projects in the area that cost $11,705,050:

  • Replacement and re-routing of the 60-year-old stormwater piping system
  • Re-routing and upgrading of the sanitary sewer
  • Installation of a new sewer line across Queensway Street and along Lower Patricia Boulevard to provide additional capacity for future development
  • Replacement of an old water main on 7th Avenue adjacent to City Hall. The previous water main had been rated by the City to be at very high risk for failure owing to its advanced age and its cast iron construction.

After requesting legal counsel, the City has decided not to pursue a full audit of the project, saying that from an administrative and a financial standpoint, it is not warranted.

The City said they are implementing a number of changes to their policies as a result of the concerns with the project.
