Cold weather and wind could see PG reach lower than -40 tonight

Prince George is under an extreme cold warning today (Tuesday), and the forecast doesn’t look promising until next week.

That’s according to Environment Canada Meteorologist Brian Proctor, who said we could reach into the minus 40s tonight.

“So we’re looking at sort of temperatures on the order of -30 to -35 in the PG area, for overnight tonight and into tomorrow. But we’re also seeing a bit more wind as that stronger air comes in, and with that stronger wind, it pushes the wind chill values exceeding -40.”

He noted we’re a little off the record lows, but it’s still colder than normal temperatures.

“The record low was in 1950, at -37.2 for the 4th of January. And if we look at the 5th of January it’s -42.2 back in 1991.”

In terms of the dump of snow expected on Thursday, Proctor said things are still up in the air.

“It’s a little bit questionable at this point how much we’re actually going to see. Some of the new models are pulling back that precipitation and pushing it further to the south.”

That being said, Proctor said things will warm up by the weekend and into next week, noting that Sunday currently has a high of -8 for the day, and Monday shows a high of -2.
