2025 Special Olympics bid on the table for PG

The first Prince George City Council meeting of 2022 goes tonight (Monday), and one of the items is a bid for the 2025 Special Olympics BC (SOBC) Summer Games.

The staff report said the Games would fit into the 10 year Sport Tourism Strategy that was created in 2017, and that successfully hosting the Games would set the city up to bid and host the Winter Special Olympic Games in 2028.

The document said the bid would cost up to $35,000, and in-kind commitments could reach up to $60,000.

Funding for the bid would come from the Major Events Reserve.

Estimates for the economic return of the investment would be around $1.3 million.

The report said School District 57 would play a key role in keeping costs down by providing transportation, accommodations, and sports venues.

The overall budget for the event is estimated at $375,000.
