Cougars sweep the Giants to tie Vancouver in the standings

How sweep it was for the Prince George Cougars!

The Cougars scored the first three goals, two of them on the power-play, and they went on to beat the Vancouver Giants 4-2 before 2,163 fans in Langley.

Prince George won the Friday game between the two teams 3-2 in overtime.

On Saturday night, the team’s leading scorer, Koehn Ziemmer, tallied the first two goals, just 52 seconds apart, and Ethan Samson notched the winner for the second straight game, making it 3-0 at the 9:20 mark of the second period.

Riley Heidt picked up three assists while Captain Jonny Hooker completed the scoring with an empty net goal.

Tyler Brennan made 27 saves as each team had 29 shots.

Brennan stopped 64 of 68 in his two wins on the weekend.

Both teams went 2-for-4 on the power-play.

“We found different ways to win this weekend and that is so important for our young group. Friday, we battled back to win in overtime, but tonight (Saturday) we had a great start and then had some puck management issues. Vancouver put us on our heels a bit in the back half of the game, but we found a way to survive it. The last two games were certainly different ways to win and that is an encouraging sign,” said Associate Coach Josh Dixon on the 94.3 the Goat post-game show.

The (15-17-1-1) Cougars are tied with the (15-17-2-0) Giants for 6th in the Western Conference, four points ahead of the (12-16-4) Victoria Royals.

The Royals lost 9-1 Saturday in Kelowna.

Prince George will host Victoria on Tuesday and Wednesday.
