Canadian Native Fastball Championships pitch to Council

“Excellent presentation, very professional, I appreciated seeing the steam report and the impact that is going to have on the City. But really it was pitch that hit it out of the park, so I’ll be happy to vote in favour of backstopping this.”

That was Councillor Garth Frizzell, as the Canadian Native Fastball Organization Committee gave a presentation with Tourism PG at last night’s (Monday) Prince George City Council meeting asking for some updated funding.

PG is hosting the Canadian Native Fastball Championships from July 29th to the 31st, but some of the expenses have gone up since the event was cancelled in 2020.

In 2020, $26,300 was supplied for City park costs, and $21,833 was supplied for backstop and fencing.

Harley Desjarlais with the Committee said costs have gone up due to COVID-19.

“We were very surprised how much the cost for the backstop and fencing went up, from about $21,000 up about $47,000.”

$34,000 was now needed for parks costs, and backstop and fencing costs $47,435.

Carmen Herman with Tourism PG said the event is expected to drum up $3 million for the local economy.

Councillor Terri McConnachie gave some suggestions for more funding for the Committee to look at.

“So there’s a few, and especially for Indigenous sports. There’s some really targeted funding here for exactly what you’re doing.”

The updated funding was passed by Council.
