UPDATE: Bobtail Lake fire grows rapidly; 8000 hectares

JOINT ORDER

Wildfire crews continue the battle the Bobtail Lake fire about 50 kilometres southwest of Prince George, 3 kilometres south of Norman Lake.

“Last night we saw some more aggressive fire activity just due to dry conditions and erratic winds. The fire moved north and west last night.” Fire Information Officer Jill Kelsh said

The fire has grown significantly in the past 24 hours, reaching about 8000 hectares from 4500 Tuesday night. The BC Wildfire branch says the fire is showing “unpredictable and aggressive fire behaviour.”

The fire remains completely uncontained and has reached Eulatazella Lake (also known as Graveyard Lake).

120 fire fighters are being supported by 5 helicopters, 10 pieces of heavy equipment and 4 air tankers.

The BC Wildfire branch says the 4 Air Tractor AT-802F “Fire Boss” amphibious airtankers can drop water, foam or retardant on the fire. The targeting accuracy of the “Fire Boss” allows firefighting crews to take a more aggressive approach to fighting the fire.

Structural protection units and a “incident management team” are also on the scene. Fire fighting operations are taking place around the clock. The BC Wildfire branch says he current objective of efforts is to “protect structures in the area without compromising the safety of Wildfire Management Branch crews.”

Evacuation orders and alerts remain in effect for nearby residents and BC Parks has closed and evacuated Dahl Lake and Bobtail Mountain Provincial Parks.
