Paid parking at the hospital begins again

BC will be reinstating paid parking at BC Health Authority sites starting today (Friday).

The province said back in January that this will be reimplemented to make sure patients, staff, volunteers and visitors have available parking spots.

Northern Health spokesperson Eryn Collins says this will mostly affect hospitals in the Lower Mainland, as there’s not many hospitals in the north implementing paid parking.

“In our region, UHNBC is the hospital where on that campus it is a paid parking setup. It’s one of the only facilities in the north actually that does require paid parking. But that’s partly because UHNBC is unique in terms of it’s location.”

She says because it’s located in a residential area, paid parking is required to make sure there’s a proper flow of vehicles through the parking lot.

Parents and caregivers of children in the hospital, and patients in acute care settings like cancer treatment or dialysis will still have free parking available to them.

“Volunteers also are still able to park for free, and of course we do have financial hardship provisions that will continue to be managed on a case by case basis.”

The province said since April 1st, 2020, $78 million in parking fees have been waived.
