UNBC’s vanBruinessen a rebounding machine against Bobcats

Emma vanBruinessen is saving her best for last.

The fifth-year product out of Leduc, Alberta posted a 15 point, 20 rebound effort for the UNBC Timberwolves in an 87-60 drubbing over the Brandon Bobcats on Friday from the Canada West Women’s Basketball playoffs in Calgary.

She was one of seven T-Wolves players to hoop at leads 10 points in the lopsided victory.

After Brandon held a slim 17-16 advantage, UNBC kicked it into higher gear going on a 27-8 run in the second quarter.

Local product Rebecca Landry nailed back-to-back three-pointers to begin the run followed by several clutch shots from vanBruinessen, Alina Shakirova and rookie standout Sarah Kuklisin as UNBC held a 43-25 edge at halftime.

In the third, Laura Garmendia Garcia and Jenna Korolek made some tough buckets from inside the paint to keep the T-Wolves advantage over 20 points.

UNBC’s defence took over in the fourth, limiting Brandon’s ability to convert on the inside, but the Bobcats continued to shoot from outside, getting looks to go from Ingalls, Adrianna Proulx, and Reetta Tulkki.

However, Anastasia Soltes put her stamp on the game, using her speed to score on a number of occasions.

Garmendia Garcia, Sveta Boykova and vanBruinessen all recorded double-doubles.

In addition, the T-Wolves grossly outrebounded the Bobcats by a 72-24 margin.

UNBC (8-10) advances to round two tomorrow (Saturday) where they will take on the Regina Cougars (8-8) at 4pm Pacific from Mount Royal University.
