PG Sports—Tuesday, May 19

Lisa Russell of the Prince George Judo Club earned silver while Lavanna Laas and Grace Northrop of the Hart Judo Academy both picked up a pair of bronze medals at the Canadian Open Judo Championships in Saint Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec.

Russell placed 2nd in the U18 girls under-52 kilograms division.

Laas finished third in both U21 women and senior women in the under-63 kilograms weight class. Northrop took bronze in U18 girls and U21 women in under-52 kilograms.

A total of a dozen athletes Prince George participated.

–The PG Kodiaks 15U Girls earned gold in Division 3, Tier 4 at the 2015 Volleyball Canada Club Championships in
Calgary. In other PG results: The Kodiaks lost in the semi-finals in 14U Girls Division 2, Tier 3.

Prince George was eliminated in the quarter-finals in 15U Girls Division 4, Tier 3, 16U Girls Division 1, Tier 4
and 16U Girls Division 4, Tier 1. Competition wraps up today in 15, 16, 17 and 18U Boys plus 18U Girls.

–Forward David Soltes has left the Prince George Cougars and will play in his home country. Soltes, who notched 28 points (13 goals) in 44 games with the Cougars, signed a one-year deal with HC Kosice of Slovakia.

–The WHL champion Kelowna Rockets open the Memorial Cup Friday against the host Quebec Remparts. The Rockets also face Rimouski on Monday, May 25th and Oshawa on Tuesday, May 26th in round robin play.

–The Host Portage Terriers are Royal Bank Cup champions, the first team from the MJHL to capture the national Junior A hockey championship in 41 years (1974). Portage outscored the Carleton Place Canadians 5-2 in the final. The Penticton Vees were eliminated after a 2-1 loss in double overtime against Carleton Place in the semi-finals.

–Prince George Senior Lacrosse resumes regular-season play Wednesday night at 8 at Kin 1 as the 4-1 BX Pub Bandits face the 1-4 Northland/Nissan Assault.

Low temperature record falls for Prince George

Prince George recorded its coldest temperature for October 13th this morning (Monday) according to Environment Canada. "Prince George Airport registered a low temperature of minus 9.5, which broke the record of minus 7.0, set in 1993," said Environment Canada Meteorologist Gary Dickinson.

Ice making process to start at two RDFFG rinks

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George says the ice making process will start at a couple of rural rinks this week. At the start of this month, the Regional District announced ice-making would be indefinitely suspended at the Robson Valley Recreation Centre in McBride and the Canoe Valley Recreation Centre in Valemount.
