In a judgment handed down today (Thursday), Justice Coval of the BC Supreme Court has found the City of Prince George “inflicted serious harm on vulnerable people,” when removing shelter structures from the Lower Patricia encampment known as “Moccasin Flats”.

The city issued an apology today (Thursday) to all those who experienced trauma from their actions.

In a news release, the City admitted they dismantled a portion of the encampment on the belief those shelters were abandoned.

In addition, the City acknowledged more steps could have been taken to ensure those shelters had been permanently abandoned, and what additional evidence could have been brought to court.

The City stated its intention was to advance and protect the interests, health, and safety of all residents – including those at the encampment occupants, downtown business operators, and residents of the nearby Millar Addition subdivision.

Civic leaders are expected to continue to work with agencies to address the complex needs of vulnerable citizens.

City lawyers also withdrew an appeal, which sought the closure of the encampment.
