Prince George Airport Authority President and CEO Gord Duke told MyPGNow.com the pent-up demand for domestic air travel is an encouraging sign.
Airlines like Westjet, expect to return to their full, pre-pandemic flight schedule by the summer.
Duke mentioned they are hoping to bring back more flights to Calgary.
“Westjet was adding additional frequencies to Calgary, which was encouraging at that time – obviously they pulled back as soon as COVID hit, we think that is a good route and we are in contact with all of our airline partners.”
Westjet flew 48-thousand passengers on more than 450 flights yesterday (Sunday) the highest single-day count since the pandemic shut down air travel.
Duke also brought up that an even bigger resurgence was seen south of the border.
“When we look at comparisons in the United States on Sunday, they were just under 2-million people coming through their streaming points, and before COVID they were just over 2-million passengers.”
Furthermore, Duke like the rest of the staff at YXS, are finally ready to look ahead after a difficult two years.
“It’s been a tough go and we are really happy to see that coming back. We’ve had our ups and downs due to the various waves hitting the air industry and it’s been tough for sure.”
Duke reminds passengers that while provincial masking and proof of vaccination requirements are being eased, they will still have to wear a mask in the facility and aboard the plane as it is still a federal requirement.
