Over 14-thousand dollars was raised for the Share Hope Refugee Committee following last weekend’s dinner and auction hosted by the PG Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
The funds raised will be used to settle Ukrainian refugees in Prince George.
Service Officer, John Scott was pleasantly surprised by the community support.
“It says a lot. It says they are generous people with heart and I think that is the big thing is that they have heart and sympathy for what is going on with Ukrainians and I found Prince George like that. It’s always a friendly city and you can always get some help if you need it.”
Simply put, the fundraiser exceeded expectations.
“I expected maybe $6000 or something like that. We more than doubled that and I thought it was due to the generosity of our citizens.”
“As I went around the city, people were enthusiastic about it and found it was a wonderful idea. There was kind of a buzz around our city and I was really pleased,” added Scott.
In 2016, PG welcomed Syrian refugees. The city’s Immigrant and Multicultural Service Society hosted Premier Christy Clark and MLA Shirley Bond after receiving $14,000 in Refugee Readiness” funding.
During this time, privately and government-sponsored refugee families arrived in March of that year and moved into apartments.
