WHL:

The Prince George Cougars selected forward Lee Shurgot of the Saskatoon Generals U-15 AA program with the 9th overall selection in today’s (Thursday) WHL Prospects Draft (formerly known as the Bantam Draft).

In 31 games this season, Shurgot registered 100 points (57 goals and 43 assists).

For the first time, two players from Prince George were selected in the top 10 of the WHL Prospects Draft.

Forward Cameron Schmidt of the Rink Academy in Kelowna was taken 7th overall by the Vancouver Giants while forward Chase Harrington of the Delta Hockey Academy was picked 8th overall by the Spokane Chiefs.

The PG Cougars selected a pair of forwards (Wednesday) in the 2022 WHL U.S. Priority Draft.

In the first round, 16th overall, the Cougars took forward Jackson Crowder from the Dallas Stars Elite 14U AAA.

In the second round, 29th overall, Prince George picked forward Christian Plaga from the LA Jr. Kings 14U AAA.

 

The WHL best-of-7 Conference finals begin Friday.

The Kamloops Blazers host the Seattle Thunderbirds in the West (7:00) and the Edmonton Oil Kings visit the Winnipeg Ice in the East (5:00).

NHL: (2 Wednesday playoff games)

Calgary Flames  9  Edmonton Oilers  6

Matthew Tkachuk notched a hat trick for the Flames who lead the series 1-0 with Game 2 Friday night at 7:30 (PT) in Calgary.

Carolina Hurricanes  2  New York Rangers  1

Ian Cole scored at 3:12 of overtime to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 will be played Friday night at 5:00 in Carolina.

Two Stanley Cup playoff games tonight: Tampa Bay at Florida (4:00 PT) followed by St. Louis at Colorado (6:30). Both Tampa and Colorado lead their Conference semifinals 1-0.

BCHL:

Penticton Vees  8  Nanaimo Clippers  2 

The Vees won the best-of-7 Fred Page Cup championship series 4-0. Penticton finished the playoffs on a 16-game winning streak. They went 16-1 overall.

NBA:

Golden State Warriors  112  Dallas Mavericks  87

The Warriors lead the best-of-7 Western Conference Final 1-0 with Game 2 Friday night at 6:00 in San Francisco.

The NBA Eastern Final continues tonight at 5:30 (PT) with the Boston Celtics at the Miami Heat. Miami leads the series 1-0.

Seattle Mariners  5  Toronto Blue Jays  1

The (20-18) Jays host the lowly Cincinnati Reds Friday night (4:07 PT).

One game tonight and that will be played in Quesnel at 8:00 as the Crossfire battle PG Assault.
