Cougars add scoring punch; two players from PG selected in top 10 of WHL Prospects Draft

The Prince George Cougars landed some more scoring punch in today’s (Thursday) WHL Prospects Draft (formerly known as the Bantam Draft).

The Cats selected forward Lee Shurgot of the Saskatoon Generals U-15 AA program with the 9th overall selection.

In 31 games this season, Shurgot registered 100 points (57 goals and 43 assists).

The Cougars’ then selected Jett Lajoie from the Winnipeg Bruins U-15 AAA program with the 28th overall pick. In 25 games this season, Lajoie had 45 points (26 goals, 19 assists).

In round three, the Cats had two selections, they took defenceman Leith Hunter of the Vancouver NW Hawks U-15 AAA with the 50th pick and landed centre Aiden Foster of the Lloydminster 15U AAA Bobcats.

After not heading to the podium in round four, PG took blueliner Max Threinen from the Yorkton Terriers U15 AA program in the fifth.

The Cougars then addressed the crease in by selecting Brady Holtvogt of the Humboldt Broncos U15 AA team in the sixth round.

A trio of selections was made by the Cats in round seven; they included defenceman Kieran Thibault (138th overall) from the Kamloops-based Thompson Blazers, blueliner Mitchell DaCoste (145th) from the Airdrie Xtreme U-15 AA followed by left-winger Rowan McDonald via the PAC Saints U15’s.

In round eight, Cranbrook’s Logan Flint heard his name called by the Cougars. He played last year for the Rink Hockey Academy in Kelowna.

For the first time, two players from Prince George were selected in the top 10 of the WHL Prospects Draft.

Forward Cameron Schmidt of the Rink Academy in Kelowna was taken 7th overall by the Vancouver Giants while forward Chase Harrington of the Delta Hockey Academy was picked 8th overall by the Spokane Chiefs.

In addition, local product and Cariboo Cougar U-15 player Ryder Green was selected by the Brandon Wheatkings in the eighth round (158th overall).
