Prince George Fire Centre saw two wildfires over the weekend

The BC Wildfire Service was called to two fires over the weekend in the Prince George Fire Centre.

“They were called in on Sunday, and one was just an assist for a local fire department. They were both suspected human caused, but origin and cause is still investigating, and that investigation is still underway,” said Fire Information Officer Tamara Brooks.

She added that there have been more fires they’ve been keeping their eyes on this, with a total of six so far.

“We have actually had a total of 13 since the beginning of fire season, which was April 1st.”

Brooks noted that some of the fires on that list could have been small investigations into lightning strikes, but said anything human caused could be a variety of things.

“Campfires are one of the causes that fall under that category, but human caused fires include anything other than lightning. So they could be caused by industrial sources, it could be recreational, quads, dirt bikes, backfiring, things like that, lawnmowers even. So it’s a pretty broad category of what human caused fires can be started by.”

130 wildfires have been recorded so far this year, and the BC Wildfire Service suspects 90% of them so far are human caused.

If you see a wildfire, you’re asked to call 1-800-663-5555, or *5555 from your cellphone.
