The Prince George Public Interest Research Group (PGPIRG) is a non profit organization at UNBC that focuses on programs related to social justice and environmental justice, and they’re offering residents a summer opportunity.
Executive Director Ashkan Pooya said they’re looking for people interested in growing food.
“PGPIRG is responsible for some of the farms on campus. And this summer we decided to assign part of our space in our farms to some people to work and grow something for themselves, and learn how to do farming and gardening.”
Pooya added that this is available for a diverse group of people, including those with disabilities, youth, retired people, people with low income, single mothers, indigenous people, and students.
It was also noted that this is an opportunity for people to get free training and education.
“Every week we have two sessions for people who are here. And we teach them prepare beds, how to transplant, how to grow stuff, and everything. So it is kind of educational.”
Pooya said they have a coordinator that helps teach people how to grow this food, but they also are willing to teach them on how to get it to market and sell it.
The original deadline for this program was in mid May, but Pooya said they are looking for some more people to get involved.
