Cirque du Soleil infesting the CN Centre this weekend

Live events are making their way back to Prince George in a big way this Summer.

This weekend, Cirque du Soleil’s OVO, will be infesting the CN Centre.

“What makes OVO special is our theme, we’re inspired by bugs,” Janie Mallet, Senior Publicist of OVO.

“There’s definitely that influence of multiple insects, very colourful, warm, joyful, uplifting, you’ll hear that Brazilian influence with the bossa nova notes, but we also see it in the characters.”

The show first opened in Montreal in 2009, and has since traveled to 155 cities in 26 countries.

Mallet said there are 52 performers from 25 different nationalities in the show.

“We come from all around the world, both on-stage and backstage, our technicians are also from different countries, because we thrive on choosing the best of the best,” Mallet explained.

“It is just in itself, quite the logistics, to travel everybody from city to city, and immigration. We move every week, we arrived here at the CN Centre in Prince George on Monday, and we set up in one day.”

Mallet added 100 local stage hands are hired to help with the set up in 12 hours.

“We follow the story of the bluefly, our voyager, who’s on a trip, and he’s kind of backpacking with an egg on his back,” Mallet explained.

“He encounters this new colony of bugs, and the whole story is how do they interact with each other.”

During the show, Trampoline Performer Matthew Piva from Australia, will be a cricket.

“I have a green costume and cricket legs,” Piva said.

“We do a lot of different things throughout the whole show, but we’re pretty much goofy characters, we’re never really too serious.”

There will be seven performances of the show in Prince George this weekend, before OVO moves on to Red Deer, AB next week.
