City of PG looking into possibility of running Canada Day Celebration

Prince George’s Canada Day Celebration at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park has been a tradition for 49 years but questions still remain on who will run the event going forward.

This year, a group of prominent community members, which included the likes of Dave Mothus and Kyle Sampson, Aimee Cassie, Craig Briere, and Dawna Varley helped run the event in partnership with the Multicultural Heritage Society.

Mayor Lyn Hall told MyPGNow.com the city plans to sit down with the non-profit to discuss the possibility of taking it over.

“There will be conversations between staff and the Multicultural Heritage Society who have been the long-time group that has been in charge of the Canada Day celebration. Those conversations will take place and we will go from there.”

Hall mentioned while no official decision has been made by the city to take the event over, they were really pleased with this year’s turnout.

“The main takeaway was the number of people that attended. I think people were just so ready to get out and celebrate Canada Day. You know, I was there at about 11 o’clock in the morning and the crowds were exceptional and they continued that way all day.”

“It is a signature event in our city and to celebrate Canada’s birthday is significant. It’s the thing to do and I made the comment during the celebration that the people who are there are indicative of what our community is made up of. We are a multicultural community.”

He added more municipalities are organizing Canada Day festivities now with the help of several non-profit groups.
