Hockey:

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a new goalie.

The Leafs acquired Matt Murray, plus two draft picks (3rd round in 2023 and 7th round in 2024) from the Ottawa Senators in return for future considerations.

The Senators will retain 25% of Murray’s salary as part of the trade.

The 28-year-old has a 2.77 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage, and 14 shutouts in seven NHL seasons with Ottawa and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

According to media reports, Evgeni Malkin will test free agency for the first time in his career.

The 35-year-old Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins remain at a contract impasse.

In 16 seasons with the Penguins, he has 1,146 points in 981 games with Pittsburgh.

The Chicago Blackhawks have placed forward Brett Connolly of Prince George on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout.

The 30-year-old Connolly was signed through next season at a cap hit of $3.5 million.

He appeared in just nine games with the Blackhawks last season, picking up one assist.

In 536 NHL games with five teams (Tampa Bay, Boston, Washington, Florida, and Chicago) Connolly has 195 points, including 101 goals.

He won the Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018.

Women’s Soccer:

Canada shut out Costa Rica 2-0 Monday to clinch the top spot (with a 3-0 record) in Group B ahead of the knockout rounds at the CONCACAF Women’s Championship.

The Olympic gold medallists from Canada will play Jamaica in the semifinals on Thursday while the United States will battle Costa Rica in the other semi.

Winning the CONCACAF 8-team tournament comes with a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics and a berth in the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup in 2024.

 

MLB:

The Toronto Blue Jays will start a 6-game homestand against the (46-41) Philadelphia Phillies tonight (Tuesday 4:07 PT).

Toronto has lost nine of its last 10 games.

CFL:

Week 6 of the CFL season starts Thursday (4:35 PT) with the (1-4) Edmonton Eskimos at the (1-3) Montreal Alouettes.

The (5-0) Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the (4-0) Calgary Stampeders Friday night (5:30 PT).

The (3-1) B.C. Lions do not play again until one week from Thursday (July 21st) when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Western teams are a combined 17-6 while Eastern teams are a combined 2-13.
