Ex PG Cougar signs two year deal with Winnipeg Jets

Jansen Harkins is staying in Winnipeg for a little while longer.

The 25-year-old Harkins re-signed with the Jets Saturday.

It’s a two-year, 1.7 million dollar contract.

He played most of the 2021-22 season with the Jets, scoring 13 points in 77 games.

His previous contract was also for two years, but for less money at 1.45 million.

Harkins was drafted by the Jets from the Prince George Cougars in the second round of the 2015 NHL draft, 47th overall.

In 2020, former head coach Paul Maurice had high praise for Harkins when he was trying to break into the league.

“I don’t know that I have had a player who has been given less opportunity and stayed in the fight and competed as hard as he has… there was no choice but to call him up… he works so hard you just have to play him.”

Harkins was selected by the Cougars second overall in the 2012 WHL bantam draft behind only Matt Barzal.

Over the 5 seasons Harkins played with the Cougars he skated in 275 games and tallied 242 points.
