Prince George woman to be apart of RCMP class action lawsuit

A class action lawsuit being brought forward by hundreds of women who are claiming discrimination and harassment by the RCMP will have the voice of one Prince George woman.

From 2001-2004, Valerie Bergey worked for the North District RCMP branch in Prince George as an office assistant in the Traffic Services Section.

She says while working there, she was repeatedly bullied by the officers.

“Like on one occasion the superintendent there blocked me in my work station, which is a form of assault,” says Bergey, “and on another occasion, my sergeant pushed me and snatched papers out of my hand, and on one day he had hit me.”

Bergey says she did ask for the harassment to be stopped, but her pleas were not heard.

A five day hearing to determine certification of a class action proceeding is set to start Monday in BC Supreme Court in Vancouver.
