BC, SD57, seeing highest enrollment in French immersion schools of all time

More students in BC and Prince George are attending école than ever before.

According to Canadian Parents for French (CPF), 9.72% of public school students in the province were enrolled in French immersion programs in the 2021-22 school year.

School district 57 is just below that average, at 9.29% French enrollment.

“As we head into the new school year, we know demand for French Second Language programs remains high,” says CPF BC & Yukon President Nancy Taylor. “Learning French and becoming bilingual can provide your child with lifelong educational, professional, cultural, and social opportunities.”

Since 2015-16, School District 57 has seen a in increase of 9.45% in French immersion enrollment, up 101 students.

In that same time, school enrollment across the board was down 3.59% in SD57.

“We commend those school districts across the province that have been finding ways to increase the availability of French immersion in their communities,” says Taylor.

She also says there is usually a wait list to get into these schools across the province due to a lack of space and qualified teachers.

Students will return to school on September 6th.
