UNBC Timberwolves:

Striker Michael Henman of the UNBC Timberwolves men’s soccer team is the obvious choice as Canada West Player of the Week.

Henman became the first player in the league to post back-to-back hat tricks.

In a doubleheader against the Victoria Vikes at Masich Place Stadium, he scored three goals in a 4-1 UNBC victory on Friday and added three more in a 3-0 triumph on Saturday.

The UNBC men’s soccer team is 2-1-1 on the season and will play again Friday and Saturday night at 7:45 in Kamloops against the 3-1 TRU WolfPack.

The UNBC women’s soccer team is 1-1 after a weekend split.

The UNBC women lost 1-0 to UBC Okanagan on Saturday in Kelowna before scoring a 1-0 victory over Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Sunday in Kamloops.

The Timberwolves host Winnipeg Friday night at 6:00 and Manitoba Sunday at noon.

MLB:

Toronto Blue Jays  7  Baltimore Orioles  3  (1st game)

Toronto Blue Jays  8  Baltimore Orioles  4  (2nd game)

The Jays swept the doubleheader to extend their winning streak to five games.

Toronto will visit Baltimore again tonight (Tuesday) and Wednesday (4:05 PT).

The (75-59) Blue Jays are 3rd in the A.L East and are holding down the third and final
wild-card spot in the American League (behind Tampa Bay and Seattle).

The (71-64) Orioles are 4 1/2 games behind the Jays for a playoff berth.

CFL: (Final two games in Week 13)

Week 14 of the CFL season begins Friday night (4:30 PT) with the (8-2) B.C. Lions at the (4-7) Montreal Alouettes.

The Lions are 2nd in the West Division, six points behind the (11-1) Winnipeg Blue Bombers and two points in front of the (7-4) Calgary Stampeders.

NFL:

The NFL regular season opens Thursday night at 5:20 (PT) with Buffalo Bills at the L.A. Rams.

BC Football Conference: 

The (1-4) PG Kodiaks host the (2-4) Langley Rams Saturday night in the BC Football Conference.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Masich Place Stadium.

Hockey:

Canada struck gold at the women’s world hockey championship in Denmark defeating the U.S. 2-1 in the final.

The Canadian women have captured 12 gold medals at the world championship (1990, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2012, 2021, 2022) in addition to eight silver (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017) and one bronze (2019).

The Prince George Cougars concluded their four-day Training Camp Sunday night at CN Centre.

The Cougars play four pre-season games with the first two this weekend in Port Coquitlam: Friday against Vancouver Saturday against Victoria.

Prince George will also meet the Blazers Friday, September 16th in Kamloops before hosting the Blazers on Saturday, September 17th.

The regular season opens for the Cougars on Friday, September 23rd when they host the Tri-City Americans.

The three-day Training Camp for the Prince George Spruce Kings wrapped up Sunday at the Coliseum.

The Spruce Kings play four pre-season games starting on Thursday against the Centennials in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings also host Merritt on Wednesday, September 14th, and Salmon Arm on the 15th before their final exhibition game on the 17th in Salmon Arm.

They open their regular season on the road, Friday, September 23rd at Coquitlam.

Tennis:

Rafael Nadal is out at the US Open.

The second-seeded Nadal lost in four sets to American (and 22nd seed) Frances Tiafoe in 4th round action.
